German Claw Mount For Riflescope Needs Bases

Nick Harvey answers shooters’ questions.

Q
A mate of mine brought me back from Germany a secondhand Hensoldt scope with a 26mm tube and rings with hooks underneath. I want to mount this scope on my Remington Model 700 , but so far have been unable obtain any bases for it. Where can I find these bases?
– Des Fulton

A
Evidently your scope is fitted with a pair of the numerous European detachable “claw” rings. These were individually hand-fitted to their bases which were in turn hand-matched to the rifles. I can understand your desire to keep the original set up, but the fitting is a tough problem and in most cases obtaining a pair of bases may be difficult. My good friend Graham Spraggon has had wide experience with Germanic claw mounts and may be able to help or suggest a solution. Ring him on 02- 6760 9703.
