Inner City Pub Is Not-So PC

The KB Hotel in lower Foveaux Street, Surry Hills, near Central Station, used to be a favourite lunch destination for me until they changed their menu to an American, cheesy-greasy type of fare. It may have improved in the months since, but one

thing they really need to be congratulated on is their relatively recent change in decor.

Whether it’s an homage to outdoorsmen of the past, a pisstake or a mistake, the cavelike interior and its several heads on the wall, along with old Civilian Marksmanship Program instructional posters are very evocative of a time past when hunters and shooters were widely respected, rather than unjustifiably derided and victimised.

Let’s hope the trend continues and expands, but in inner-city Sydney I won’t be holding my breath. If you are in Sydney CBD, it’s worth the short walk up from Central to check it out. And if you like cheese with everything, then dining there may be just your cup of tea … and it will reward them a little for being so brave and un-politically correct in these maddening times.
