Standing up in the sunlight, you can see the antlers of this old buck are well worn.

An old buck gone backwards

The fallow rut is in full swing and the morning was spent following up grunting bucks to see how good they are and taking some photos and video of the rutting fallow bucks. It’s a top time to be out and about.

After an enjoyable morning, I make my way back when I stop and glass an area that looks good for a buck to be bedded up in during the late mornings warmer temperature.

There are plenty of shaded areas to stay cool in and green pick to feed on, and the permanent flow of water at the moment makes it a good place for deer to rest and snooze after rutting through the night and early morning.

A few minutes glassing with the Steiner 8×30 binoculars and a buck is found bedded. He looks big in the body and has a very thick neck but his antlers are poor.

Stalking in closer, he looks to be a buck that with old age has gone backwards in antler growth. It also looks as if he’s been touched up by other bucks judging by the scars and wounds that are easily spotted on him.

Plenty of video and photos are taken of this buck and at very close range as he is so tired that only when we stand up and out of the light cover used to stalk in on him does he get up and on the move, till next time we cross paths.

The photo of me with Chris is of a fallow buck with better antlers that Chris hunted during the rut.
