6.5-284 Norma

Long Range Load For 6.5-284 Norma

Q: I own a Model 70 rifle with a medium-heavy 600mm fluted barrel chambered in 6.5-284. I intend using this rifle for long range fallow deer hunting out to 400 metres. Can you suggest a load with the Nosler 140gn Partition for this purpose? Also, what kind of trajectory over 500 metres?

A: I have a rifle similar to your’n, a Model 70 Featherweight in 6.5-284, but mine wears a 600mm Tobler fluted barrel. My rifle has mild recoil and 52gn of Re-19 drives the 140gn Nosler Partition (B.C .490) at 2900fps. Sighted in 84mm high at 100 metres, it is 68mm high at 200, drops 116mm at 300, and 503mm at 400. At 400 some holdover will be necessary – about 25 or 30cm should be enough to land the bullet in a deer’s chest. The remaining velocity at 400m is 2125 fps and energy is 1403 ft/lb. Plenty for taking larger red deer out to 500 – always supposing you are capable of placing the bullet precisely at that distance.
