Shot during gun theft
A Mt Druitt man was shot in the foot last weekend during a robbery in which the offenders got away with cash and an unspecified number of registered firearms. It is the latest in a number of gun thefts in NSW this year and the first in which an injury occurred. Police only described the offenders as of solid build and 180cm tall.
Abela’s approved
Abela’s Gun Shop has been given the go-ahead by Campbelltown Council in NSW, just outside Sydney. The new shop is expected to be open in a matter of weeks. We’ll keep you informed on progress.
Google bans gun shopping
Google is under fire from shooters and the shooting industry – primarily in the US – for refusing to include guns, knives and ammunition in the search engine of its shopping platform, following the conversion of freely listed items to the pay-per-item Google Shopping. Cars, gambling products, cigarettes and other items are also banned by Google. Gun control advocates have hailed the ban; the pro-gun side is highly critical, citing US constitutional protections for gun ownership; and others suggest Google is only hurting its own profits by shunning the multi-billion dollar firearm trade.
Boy Scout rifles
Marlin in the US will loan XT rimfire rifles to the Boy Scouts for their summer camps, where the firearms will be used in range and merit badge programs. The XT range includes models scaled down for kids. “These rifles ensure that young shooters get off to the right start, learning safety, proper form, technique and mechanics,” Marlin CEO George Kollitides said. “Having this opportunity to work with the Boy Scouts and pass along our love of shooting to the next generation is something very meaningful.”
Bow and deer hunting workshops
Don’t forget the two hunting workshops coming up from the Game Council of NSW. On 10-12 August at Boolaroo, near Newcastle, you can spend a weekend learning everything there is to know about bowhunting, all for just $150. A month later, 7-9 September, the same fee will give you access to a weekend’s worth a deer hunting knowledge and skills, from scouting tips to sausage making. It’ll be held at Filskis Outreach Centre, Capertee, in the state’s Central West. Full details of both workshops are on the Game Council website.
Sticker fun
The NSW Greens have produced an anti-hunting sticker in their campaign against new laws that will open the state’s national parks to licensed hunters, but we thought they’d got it slightly wrong so, er, improved the design a little. Well, we figure that if the Greens can put their name to a love for national parks, the Shooters and Fishers Party should be able to as well, so we suggest they look at using their logo prominently on a pro-hunting bumper sticker. Of course, hunters love national parks just as much as any Green (probably more so in our experience) so one of our friends hijacked the original sticker to profess one angle of that love. There’s a rumour running around that someone is producing a sticker in response to the Greens’ one.
