Ammunition is no longer available for the 5mm Remington.

Unknown 5mm Remington

Q
My mate recently bought a 5mm Remington Model 592 rifle in as-new condition at a real bargain price. We have asked several gunshops about the history of rifle and cartridge, without any luck. Can you enlighten us and also tell us where we might be able to get ammo for it.

The 5mm Remington was introduced in 1970 for the bolt action Models 591 and 592. It was designed for varmint-small game shooting. The 38gn hollow-point jacketed “Power Lokt” bullet had a muzzle velocity of 2100fps. At 100 yards it delivered 133 percent more striking energy than a high-speed .22 Long Rifle bullet and 28 percent more than a .22 Win. Mag. Alas, the 5mm Rem. failed to compete successfully with the .22 Magnum for small game hunting and both rifles were soon discontinued. Remington made 20,000 Model 591s and 7000 Model 592s before the guns were discontinued in 1973. Ammo is no longer being made, although Remington did do a limited run a few years ago. So I guess your friend didn’t get that much of a bargain after all.
